Backend and Data Engineer

**Job Title: Backend \& Data Engineer (AI\-Driven Construction Tech)** **Location** : Remote (LATAM) **Schedule** : 20 hours/week to start; US hours. **Company Overview** Our client is an early\-stage construction technology startup building an AI\-powered platform to dramatically improve residential construction bidding. The product aggregates architectural plans, material pricing, and subcontractor data to generate near real\-time, highly accurate bids. This role offers hands\-on ownership, close collaboration with the founder and the CTO, and the opportunity to shape a product with strong market pull. **Role Overview** We are seeking a **product\-minded Backend \& Data Engineer** with strong fundamentals in data engineering and applied AI/ML. This role focuses on building scalable backend systems, data pipelines, and AI\-powered services that power accurate construction bids. You will work across TypeScript and Python systems and help translate messy real\-world data into reliable, production\-grade outputs. **Key Responsibilities** * Design and build backend services using **NestJS (TypeScript)** * Develop and maintain **data pipelines** for ingesting and processing construction\-related data (documents, pricing, subcontractors) * Build and integrate **Python\-based AI/ML services** into the core platform * Work on **document parsing, structured data extraction, and AI\-assisted analysis** * Collaborate closely with product, founder, and CTO to shape MVP features * Ensure systems are scalable, maintainable, and production\-ready **Tech Stack** * **Frontend:** React * **Backend:** NestJS (TypeScript) * **AI / Data Services:** Python * **Infrastructure:** Google Cloud Platform (GCP) **What We’re Looking For** * Strong **backend engineering fundamentals** (not just prompt engineering or LLM wrappers) * Solid experience in **data engineering** , APIs, and system design * Comfortable working across **TypeScript and Python** environments * Experience with **document parsing, computer vision, or complex data workflows** is a strong plus * Product\-minded mindset: able to balance speed, accuracy, and real\-world constraints
